Sep. 25th, 2003 09:11 amShow me the data is an excellent resource for anyone who wants solid information and analysis about the health effects of body size, grounded in research and refreshingly resistant to the unquestioned pro-weight loss bias found in most media and medical sources.
Right now, they've got articles up looking at the studies on Caloric Restrictions and Longevity, ongoing critical statistical analysis of the "300,000 deaths" associated with obesity, and a discussion of a terrible weight loss bill proposed in the UK that includes a lot of really great analyis about weight loss surgery, the errors involved in equating quitting smoking with losing weight, and other thoughtful, interesting stuff.
And, Jon Robison wrote: "We are really happy and excited to announce that starting in January, we will have our own Journal. That's right, the Healthy Weight Journal will become Health At Every Size with the first issue in January 2004! Wayne Miller and I will be the co-editors, and the Journal will be devoted entirely to informing, supporting and promoting the implementation of HAES by healthcare professionals."
I'm thrilled about this, because Jon Robison was quite helpful a few years ago when I had received very mean fat-hating mail in response to an article I had written (here's a website documenting what happened)-- he's a fine researcher, a strong advocate, and, in that one experience of him, I found him to be a very warm human being. And he's putting together a great board, which includes the amazing Marilyn Wann of Fat!So?. The journal is focused on healthcare providers, which is such a great place for education, strategies and rigorous discussion about these things.
Check out Show Me The Data if you'd like to learn more.
