I'm finding it a little overwhelming to write a post about my trip to Budapest. The content of the conference was dense and intellectually and emotionally intense for me, and what I saw of the city itself woke up unexpected parts of me. I took only a few pictures.

Here's the view from my window at Kalvin Haz. I walked down this street to Raday, which has many bars, cafes, restaurants, and the Karoli Gaspar University, where the Jonathan Edwards in Europe conference was held.

It's hard to see in this picture, but there were faces on the building across from the window, looking back at me. Everywhere I looked, there were things going on with buildings that suprised or startled me or took my breathe away.

Missing my trike, I walked across the Danube on the Szabadság bridge.

This is a view of Pest from Buda, the Parliment building from the Fisherman's Bastion.

In Pest, in Kalvin square. Very close to the river and to the Great Market hall, where I got sour cherry and cheese strudel and lots of paprika to bring home.

Well, so much beauty, and also so much insistent humanity (and, so, for me, not romantic), and lots of traces of long, painful history. And a big jazz band in a little courtyard festival playing the theme song to The Flintstones, ending with shouting what I'm pretty sure was a Hungarian variation on "Wilma!" at the end, to the delight of the crowd.

1993. I'll see if I can find the pic of me with an awful goatee drinking beer on the island between Buda and Pest.
