On the road from Marfa to Presidio

My mother and me in Big Bend country, on the way to the park. We're driving along the Rio Grande.

It really was.

Whoa. It's impossibly vast and beautiful out there.

I love your hat! and oh, to be in a tank top feeling the sunshine.

It is, it just goes on and on and on.

That hat stays in Texas with my parents (they brought it along for me), and it has a strap under the chin so that it doesn't blow off in the wind. I completely remind myself of one of my aunts on family vacations when I was a kind when I wear it, and it's kind of perfect at creating shade.

You look like you're headed out to hug the whole beautiful world.

That was pretty much the feeling.

Also, when the wind blows in Texas, it's always made me feel like I was about to fly.

I moved to Austin nine years ago, and never regretted it for a moment. One of the things I particularly love is that Texas Weather is a drama queen! I always enjoy reading your posts, but I must confess that I am particularly enjoying the Texas ones. (And your train trip observations.)

Texas Weather is a drama queen! How perfect is that?

I spent the night in Austin with my younger brother and his family -- they've recently moved back there. He took me to see Barton Springs Pool in Zilker Park, which looked like a completely amazing place to swim, and also out on a boat on Ladybird Lake, which was really fun. I've given readings in Austin a couple of times, but haven't really spent much time there. Maybe someday I will -- I've heard such good things about it. Glad you're enjoying the Texas posts -- it was so good to be there.

beautiful!

It's true! There are desert, mountain and river environments in Big Bend, and just so much space.

I would say that you two look exactly alike but who can tell who is who?
So maybe you do look exactly alike!

Anyway it looks like an amazing place... like the time I went to alaska and drove through the Yukon!

it makes you feel really small doesn't it?

I'm the one with my arms outstretched.

It is, it's good for a sense of perspective, for sure.

Beauty! My brother lived in Marfa for a couple of years in the late eighties before it got hip and raved about Big Bend, but I never got to go, sadly.

It was a sight to see. If you ever do go, the drive from Marfa to Presidio along the Rio Grande is just so bleak and igneous and gorgeous.
