Hey, so it looks like I'm reading during Pride week in Northampton at Pride&Joy on Sunday, May 2. And that means that the book should be showing up in the store there soon, before the official publication date. I hope Flaunt It! shows up in force, and everybody else, too! Stay tuned for details...

And I just got a great review from Richard Labonte's syndicated column, BookMarks -- the April 26 column. The review begins, "The magic of this elegant novel is that it embraces both the surreal and the so real with sublime charm."

Whenever anybody even comes close to bringing up the sublime in reference to my work, it makes me very happy. Wheeheee, here goes...

Hi Susan-- This is totally unrelated, but I just wanted to say hi and let you know I just added you. I interviewed you for my college paper many years ago when you were touring with Martha Moody. Talking to you was probably the first time I'd talked to a fat lesbian aobut being one (I'm one, too). So I just wanted to drop a note a let you know that.

Have a good day!
Heather

Hey Heather --

That's so cool! Did you interview me in Santa Cruz? If that was you, I remember -- you asked great questions, and the whole feeling of that reading was very warm and alive and engaged.

Let me know if you have any interest in a review copy of the new book -- I'm sure Firebrand would be happy to send one, if you do.
(the email address on my user profile is good for that sort of stuff.)

Glad you added me.

Oh wow, crazy. Yeah, it was in Santa Cruz. I'm glad you remember.

I no longer work for a queer paper, so I'm not sure I could get a review in, but you know... we have someone who reviews books. I bet I could ask her if she'd review it. Of course, I'd love to read it. :)

Lovely -- just send your contact info and I'll ask the publisher to send one along. Don't worry if it doesn't work out, but it's worth a try ... the book has really nice praise on the cover from Alice Sebold, Elizabeth McCracken and other folks that sometimes helps people/institutions who aren't usually interested in queer stuff get interested.

Great. Well, as you know, Santa Cruz has a huge queer population for a city our size, so we've reviewed queer books before. So we'll see. I'll email the info along.

Lovely!

Cool! If you got Venus of Chalk, too, that's the whole oeuvre (always wanted to have an oeuvre.) If you didn't get it, let me know...

Congratulations! I can't wait to read it. I'm going to try to make the Northampton reading, but I'm wondering if you're going to be hitting any places in Boston or Cambridge?

Hi! Hold the phone, the Northampton date looks like it's changing to Wednesday, May 5... to be confirmed.

I know, I've been wanting to read Dish It Up Baby, too, as soon as I have time to take a breath! I'd like to read in Boston -- Karen has said she'd check with New Words and all, but nothing is set up yet...

And I hear that we're both going to New Orleans. I'm excited about that, since I've never been. It'll be great to meet you.

I know! I'm suuuuper excited about New Orleans. It's been ages since I've been down there so it should be a fun trip all around. You might drop a note to Jaclyn Friedman at New Words. I think her email is on their web site, but if not lemme know and I'll hunt it up for you. She organizes most of the readings for them and is incredibly nice/helpful/interesting.
