Yay!!! Emma Donoghue emailed me back. She said she's read Martha Moody and really liked it. I'm sending her a copy of Venus of Chalk. This pleases me no end.
my local library haven't been able to get hold of 'venus of chalk' because apparently there are "no uk rights to publication" - is that true, can we really not read it here yet? it's available on e.g. amazon.co.uk. *puzzled smiley-unsmile*
I'm sorry to hear that. I don't know what the rules are for use of books by libraries in the UK, but it's true that the book is published in the US and only distributed in the UK -- there's no British edition. (The Women's Press did publish an edition of my second book, Martha Moody, which is why it was widely available there. It's now out of print there, although people can still get it in the U.S.)
I am glad to know, though, that folks can now get Venus of Chalk through amazon.co.uk. Wonder if it's at independent bookstores like Silver Moon at Foyles in London?
so far neither libertas! (http://www.libertas.co.uk/) nor silvermoon (http://www.foyles.co.uk/foyles/sm/default.asp) list it as amoung the titles they stock...
i talked with my local library some more about this, and the gist of it seems to be that they are encouraged/bound to purchase a UK publication rather than a US publication, so that kinda suggests 'venus of chalk' is going to be published in the UK as well in the not too distant, or osmebody is assuming that it will be - do you know whether this is the case/any more about this?
We're shooting for NOLOSE. My first weeks in LA will be spent slaving over the computer. Yes, Diggerboots is packing up the U-Haul tomorrow morning, and me on Tuesday. We're doing it! Thanks for the nice wishes. xoxo
