[livejournal.com profile] shryve just let me know about the Fat Female Film Festival, which is currently taking submissions (until mid-March) for a festival in Tampa, Florida. This is new to me, but the purpose is to support fat-positive filmmakers, and, in the films section, they mention that Julie Wyman is coming and showing her film, Buoyant, which features the Padded Lilies fat synchronized swim troupe, along with Archimedes' study of floating bodies and the dry stroke simulator, for swimming out of water.

I met Julie when she was a student at Amherst College, and I'd bet that she's doing smart, interesting work.

We saw Bouyant at a film festival here, I think we sponsored it or something. It was fantastic. This film festival is great. I like how she asks for money for the festival...

"To this end, I hope that everyone donates at least one tenth the amount of money to this project that they have spent on diet pills, supplemental meal products, fad diet literature, and meal programs. To this end, I hope that everyone donates at least one tenth the amount of time to this project that they have spent on stair machines that raise them nowhere, time that they have spent hating themselves and their bodies, and time that they have spent apologizing for who they are. I know it is time that we start investing in and celebrating who we are right now."

How far is Tampa from West Palm Beach? My parents have a house there. Road trip?

I kinda like Fat Girl Fleamarket, but, yeah, all those "Fs" aren't a saving grace.

I saw a preview for a new show on Showtime called "Fat Actress" staring Kirstie Ally. It looks funny and hopeful. I'd be over-the-top with excitement except she's also doing Jenny Craig commercials where she's talking about being fat and asking other fatties to join her on Jenny. If only she could stay an unapologetic or at least self-mocking Fat Actress. But I'm still excited about the show.

I hear it's like watching a train wreck.... a head on collision with self loathing.

will you write about it? i don't have showtime.

Oh man, I'll be really upset if it is just a stereotype confirming odyssey into self-hatred. I will watch and write about it, but I'm not very good at writing cogent reviews so hopefully there will be some other people out there doing the same. If you lived here, you could come watch it on my new DVR.

The previews looked very funny and not all bad, so I'm holing out a smidgen of hope.

I don't think I've ever seen a TV show called Fat Anything -- well, except maybe a cartoon named after Fat Albert at one point -- it would be sad if the only place they take it is self loathing, as bounce_n_jiggle has seen rumored...

It's very exciting to see her big body all glamorous all over the tv screen with that title. In my fantasy, it is a show in which she is empowered, funny and mocking of Hollywood. Alas, this is probably not to be so.

Hi Susan -- Not to preen, but Julie Wyman was actually a student at Amherst College. And yes, you can definitely expect smart and interesting work from her!

Oops -- of course that's right, anonymous person whose identity I've got a pretty firm handle on. How exciting that you've posted. I'll fix it.
