It's called a spoken word variety show, and that's variety. To add to the challenge, I'm also my house at 4 am on the morning of this one to fly in and am planning to wear my new strapless bra in public for the first time. It's a pretty big leap from my quiet life dragging a little cart up and down Elm street in Northampton. How ever, gentle readers, will it all turn out?

The next two are just me and Venus of Chalk, and I bet they will be that gorgeous exchange of live presence and words that I love like the faces of those closest to me -- always more to see there. Just heard that an old, dear friend from high school (who my first book, Fat Girl Dances with Rocks is dedicated to, actually, may show up at one). :

Come! Bring a friend! Any help spreading the word would be much appreciated...

i came to your journal by way of [livejournal.com profile] thewindrose's "all about you" posts from last january. (i'm slowly but surely checking out the journals she recommended!) i hope you don't mind that i've added you to my lj friends list.

i'd love to come to one of your readings next week, so that i can be introduced to your writing in a more personal way. i'm not yet sure which one i'll attend -- i'm available both evenings, so i'll likely just pick up and go on whichever day the mood strikes me. :)

i've never been to something like this before, so if there is some specific protocol that i should be aware of, i'd appreciate it if you'd enlighten me. also, will it be possible to purchase venus of chalk (or any of your previous books) before or after your reading?

Hi. Nice to meet you, and I'm really glad that you're coming to a reading. Don't worry too much about protocol -- it probably one of the simplest situations that there is in terms of social demands. Just show up, have a seat or browse books if you feel like it, listen, ask questions if you feel like it (or there may not be a time for questions) -- that's pretty much it. Say hi to me or other people if the mood strikes you, but there's no pressure at all to do that if you don't want to. And yes, love that question, there will definitely be books for sale at the bookstore readings.

Doesn't sound as if you're thinking about Saturday night, which would be slightly different -- $3-$5 cover charge to benefit the wonderful other magazine, it's at a bar rather than a bookstore, and there will be other readers.

I remember the first reading I ever went to -- oh it was the second, but the first by myself -- I was in college and wanted desperately to be a writer and was totally nervous about the whole thing -- could barely get myself in the door. Was glad I did though -- it's the writing itself that's the thing.
