These are my New York City glasses on my friends' J&V's couch in Northampton after seeing Brokeback Mountain, with Texas on my mind.

Yeah, they remind me of my beautiful grandmother, who my grandfather used to take pictures of in their Texas backyard standing in a patch of bluebonnets because they matched her eyes. She didn't go quite this far with the glasses, but I think of her every time I see them.

I was happy -- with very kind and lovely friends, and had just seen a movie that used a story I loved (Annie Proulx is so good) as a springboard for a movie with such meticulous and inspired use of a part of western (Texas, Wyoming) landscape and culture that both feels like one of my homes and has also always seemed like such a barren place for any kind of queer life. To see this in popular art that made my heart pound in a way that felt quite strange to me.

After I wrote this, I realized it wasn't true, and it's been bothering me. Because, for instance, my last novel is largely set in Texas and has plenty of queerness in it. But it's absolutely true that to see Brokeback Mountain made my heart pound particularly because of the setting and the sexual and emotional trajectory of the movie. Something.
