I did that planning thing yesterday:

in the next week I will write with pleasure, play and risk three or four days a week
(etc -- I'm just listing one goal for every catagory -- there's a bunch)

in the next month I will revel in full, live mutual relationships

in the next six months I will get behind Venus of Chalk with energy, courage and grace

in the next year I will explore the holy, wicked and human in fiction -- incarnational art!

in the next five years I will keep a live spirit and a sweet, wild inner life

Helps me so much to calm down and do my work to have goals written down. And then I got to have black-eyed peas and spinach, twiced baked homegrown stuffed potatoes, truffles and wine with a game of 42 with people I love -- my idea of heaven on New Year's Day. 42 is a domino game played in Texas, and I grew up playing it with my family (Texans in Colorado) -- it makes me raucous and competitive and fiercely engaged with the people I'm playing it with, and gives me such a feeling of home. Plus, it's the only game I can count on being good at. Whee.

one of the things i did in san francisco was talk with old and new friends about where we are in life and where we want to be going -- one is going to do a dissertation on homeownership in the u.s. as cultural value and policy issue, one is going kicking and screaming into adulthood (middle age?) and resolving to be gentle with herself about the temper tantrum, one is struggling with love and parenting and family and community.

in the next two to three years i will:
  • build community and infrastructure, in nolose and at work
  • be available, accept love and support graciously, have the goodness in all my relationships
  • focus on learning and development into my work life

:)

and there are specifics, of course, but...

Sounds like you were building community and digging into goodness in relationships with both hands in San Francisco.

I'm glad to know that I'm not alone in the planning thing -- it helps me a lot.

I can't think of anybody to better build community and infrastructure -- in nolose, at work, anywhere.

thanks so much! :) that's really sweet of you, and it's really moving to read about people's plans (i know we're not the only ones) in a more deailed, joy focused way, rather than the usual set-up-to-fail type new years resolutions.

Yeah, definitely joy. Woke up this morning remembering a line from an Olga Broumas poem : I want to eat my life

all of that deliciousness and the nerve to take a bite
